The island that stayed when resettlement emptied others. Drive to Farewell, then the provincial ferry does the rest.
When resettlement emptied other places in the fifties and sixties, Fogo stayed — the communities organised and built a fishermen’s co-operative instead. That history is why the place feels the way it does, and Change Islands and Twillingate are lived on and worked still too.
You drive to Farewell, about an hour and ten from our door, and the provincial ferry takes the car across. Two of our rooms are named for islands on that same run.
Check the sailings the day before — the timetable changes with the season and the crossing is the part you cannot rush.
