Every room is an island

Named for the islands out the bay

There are close to two hundred islands off this stretch of coast. Eight of them you can sleep in — every suite here is named for one, and carries a piece of that island's story.

Sivier's, Samson's, Change Islands, Black Island, Twillingate, Fogo, Exploits, Indian Islands. Some were emptied by the resettlement of the fifties and sixties, and the families came ashore — many of them here to Lewisporte. Others stayed. Fogo, Change Islands and Twillingate are lived on and worked still. The quiet ones have cabins on them now.

The furniture is hand-made from local yellow birch by two Lewisporte artisans. Tony Hunt made the antique-style pieces — the pencil-post beds, the chairs, the washstand vanities — with a seagull etched into the back of every chair. Francis Lane made the rocking chairs, one in every suite, each with an island scene wood-burned into the back panel.

The quilts, the tartans and the window toppers are made locally as well, and the pictures on the walls were taken by local photographers. The owners are local too — which is the whole of what we mean by true Newfoundland hospitality.
